A visa petition is a supporting document addressed to the consulate of the country you are applying to, explaining your travel purpose, plans, and intention to return to Turkey. This document is also referred to as a "visa request letter" or its English equivalent, "letter of intent" (cover letter). In this article, you will find the correct structure of the petition, sample texts in Turkish and English, paragraphs that vary by profession, and common mistakes. At Marsel Visa, we are here to help you prepare your petition specifically and thoroughly for your situation.

What is a Visa Petition? When is it Necessary?

A visa petition is an official document that explains who you are, where and why you are traveling, how you will cover your expenses, and that you will return to your country at the end of your trip. Some consulates require this document while others consider it optional; however, it is an element that strengthens your application in any case.

It is especially important to include a petition in the following situations:

  • If you have a previous visa denial and need to explain this situation
  • If your financial situation is relatively weak and you need to detail your source of income
  • If your travel purpose is complex (for example, a trip that combines business and vacation)
  • If you are applying for a long-term or multiple-entry visa

Structure of the Visa Petition

An effective visa petition consists of six basic sections.

1. Title and Salutation: The petition should specify which consulate or application center it is addressed to, and should begin with a standard salutation such as "Dear Consular Officer" or "To Whom It May Concern."

2. Introduction — Introduce Who You Are: Please briefly state your name, profession, and the purpose of your application.

3. Travel Plan: Write where you will go, when, and where you will stay; this information must fully match your hotel and flight reservations.

4. Ties to Turkey: This is the point the consulate questions the most. Clearly state your job, family, property, or other ties.

5. Financial Situation: Explain how you will finance the trip; if there is a sponsor, state who they are and their financial capacity.

6. Closing and Signature: Make a short, polite closing; do not forget the date and your wet signature.

It is ideal for the letter to be one page, on A4 paper, and in 11-12 point font size; letters exceeding two pages may distract the consular officer's attention.

Saygılarımızla, [Şirket Kaşesi ve Yetkili İmza] [Tarih]

İşveren izin yazısı mümkünse İngilizce hazırlanmalıdır; özellikle İspanya, İrlanda, Danimarka, Litvanya ve Suudi Arabistan konsoloslukları Türkçe yazılmış izin yazılarını kabul etmeyebilmektedir.

Mesleğe Göre Örnek Paragraflar

Dilekçenizin mesleki durum bölümü, başvuru sahibinin statüsüne göre farklılık göstermelidir.

SGK'lı çalışan iseniz: "Şirketimizde [pozisyon] olarak çalışan [Ad Soyad], [tarih aralığı] tarihleri arasında [seyahat amacı] amaçlı seyahat edecektir. Seyahat süresince karşılaşabileceği tüm masraflar kendisi tarafından karşılanacaktır. Sayın [Ad Soyad]'ın vize süresi sona ermeden ülkenizden ayrılacağını ve dönüşünde görevine kaldığı yerden devam edeceğini bilgilerinize sunarız."

Şirket sahibi iseniz: "[Şirket Adı]'nın sahibi/ortağı olarak, [tarih aralığı] tarihleri arasında [seyahat amacı] gerçekleştirmeyi planlamaktayım. Şirketimin güncel faaliyet belgesi ve mali durumumu gösteren belgeler dosyama eklenmiştir."

If you are a student: "I am continuing my education as a student at [School Name]. My travel expenses will be covered by [sponsor relationship degree]; documents showing my sponsor's financial situation and a copy of the population registry proving our kinship have been attached to my file."

If you are retired: "I receive a pension from [Institution Name] as a retiree. All of my travel expenses will be covered by my pension and savings; my bank statement supporting this situation has been attached to my file."

If You Are Applying for a Visa for the First Time

There are some specific points to pay attention to in the application of individuals applying for a visa for the first time. Since you do not have a previous Schengen or foreign travel history, it is important to specify your ties in Turkey (work, family, property) in a more concrete and detailed manner than usual in your application.

The absence of a travel history is not in itself a reason for rejection for first-time applicants; however, the consulate will give more weight to other evidence that can assess your intention to return. Clearly stating your seniority in your job, your family ties, and your plans after travel (for example, that you will return to your job or education) in your application can help compensate for the lack of travel history. If possible, showing a stable transaction history in your bank account will also strengthen your file.

In Which Language Should It Be Written?

The language in which the visa application should be written varies according to the country being applied to. As a general rule, it is considered safer for the application to be written in English or the official language of the country being applied to than in Turkish.

Some consulates do not accept applications in Turkish; among these countries, Spain, Ireland, Denmark, Lithuania, and Saudi Arabia can be cited as examples. Therefore, it is important to check the current rules regarding the language of the application for the target country before applying. If the application is prepared in Turkish and the target country does not accept it, it must be supported by a translation certified by a sworn translator.

Sponsorship Letter

If you are not covering your travel expenses yourself, a separate sponsorship letter must be prepared on your behalf. This letter should include the identity of the sponsor, the degree of closeness to you, and a clear statement that they agree to cover the expenses.

For students and unemployed individuals, sponsorship is generally accepted only by first-degree relatives (mother, father, or spouse); sponsorship by other relatives such as fiancés, uncles, or aunts is not accepted by most consulates. The sponsorship letter should be submitted along with supporting documents prepared according to the sponsor's professional status (payroll, bank statement, company documents, etc.).

Common Mistakes

Mistakes made while preparing the visa application can lead to a negative evaluation of the application. The most common issues are as follows:

  • The dates in the application do not match the flight or hotel reservations
  • Stating that expenses will be covered by the individual despite being a student or housewife
  • Failure to clearly indicate the intention to return
  • Using general internet templates directly without personalization
  • Making the application unnecessarily long and including irrelevant emotional expressions related to travel
  • Mali durum bölümünde belirsiz veya kanıtlanamayan ifadeler kullanılması

Sık Sorulan Sorular

Vize dilekçesi her başvuruda zorunlu mu?

Vize iyi niyet dilekçesi (niyet mektubu) nedir?

It can technically be written for some countries; however, countries like Spain, Ireland, and Denmark do not accept applications in Turkish. Generally, it is considered safer to write in English or the language of the target country.

Should the application be written by hand or on a computer? Applications written in legible handwriting are accepted; however, applications prepared on a computer and printed out present a more professional appearance. In both cases, a wet signature at the end of the application is mandatory.

Can I prepare the application with the help of a consultant? Yes, you can receive consulting support; however, it is important that the application contains unique, real information about you. Generic template applications can be recognized by consulates and may be evaluated negatively.

Conclusion

A visa application is a critical document that covers the weak points in your application and conveys your travel intentions to the consulate in the most accurate way. An application prepared in the correct format, in the language of the target country, and with unique information about you significantly increases the chances of a positive outcome for your application.
