🇪🇹 Ethiopia Visa Procedures
Dear visitors, welcome to our page containing the most up-to-date information regarding Ethiopia visa applications for 2025. As of June 1, 2018, citizens of the Republic of Türkiye can complete their Ethiopia visa applications electronically through the e-visa system. Applicants may obtain their visas electronically or from Türkiye prior to their travels. However, it should be noted that entry into the country with an Ethiopia e-visa is currently only permitted through Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. Entry with an e-visa from land borders or other airports is not allowed.
Ethiopia, one of the largest countries in East Africa, does not provide visa exemption to Turkish citizens. Therefore, holders of service (grey), special (green), and ordinary (burgundy) passports must obtain a visa for tourist or business travel. Holders of diplomatic (black) passports, however, are exempt from visa requirements for trips of up to 90 days. There is no visa-on-arrival application for Turkish citizens. The list of documents required for visa applications varies depending on the visa category. For this reason, applicants must first determine their purpose of travel and apply either for a tourist or a business visa. Family and friend visit visas are considered under the tourist visa category.
Applicants for an Ethiopia business visa must first apply to the Ethiopia Immigration Bureau. If the application is approved, the Embassy or Consulate General of Ethiopia can issue the business visa. Business visa applications without the approval of the Immigration Bureau are not accepted. For tourist visas, the application is made directly by preparing the required documents and submitting them to the relevant consular authority. Ethiopia visas are generally issued as single-entry and, for first-time applicants, usually granted for 30 days. The validity period of the visa begins on the date of approval, therefore travel dates and the timing of your application must be carefully planned.
One of the most important stages in Ethiopia visa applications is completing the visa application form. Prepared by the Ethiopian consular authority, this form can be completed in English or Turkish. Since the information provided on this form is used to evaluate your application, it must be filled out completely and accurately. Incomplete or incorrect information may result in the refusal of your visa or delays in the processing period. Once completed, the form must be signed and submitted together with a biometric photograph.
Ethiopia visa applications are usually concluded within 2 to 5 business days by the Ethiopian Embassy in Ankara and the Consulate General in Istanbul. However, official holidays, high application volumes, or additional document requests may extend this period. To avoid disruptions to your travel plans, it is recommended that you apply at least 10 days prior to your departure date.
Ethiopia visa fees vary depending on the type and duration of the visa. The fee consists of the consular charge, visa fee, and service fee. Payments may be made in cash or by bank transfer. In the case of a visa refusal, the fees paid to the Embassy are non-refundable. However, applicants who have not received any service may use their paid fees within 6 months.
There is no visa-on-arrival application for Turkish citizens traveling to Ethiopia. Therefore, travelers must obtain a visa prior to travel. Before entering the country, travelers must ensure they are vaccinated against yellow fever, hepatitis, and tetanus, and take precautions against malaria. Border control officers may request to see vaccination cards, round-trip flight tickets, and hotel reservation documents upon entry. During your stay, you should only consume bottled water, avoid raw foods, and carry out currency exchange only through banks.
WARNINGS!
Ethiopia visas are not issued according to planned travel dates or hotel reservations; validity begins from the date the application is approved. Tourist visas for Ethiopia are single-entry, and a new application cannot be made before the current visa expires. Applications will not be accepted without the application form, petition letter, hotel and flight reservations, passport photocopy, and proof of payment. Travelers must not exceed the validity period of their visa; otherwise, for overstays of up to 14 days, a fine of 20 USD per day is applied, while overstays longer than 14 days are subject to legal proceedings. Travelers carrying 3,000 USD or the equivalent foreign currency upon entry must declare it, and cannot exit the country with more than this amount. If they wish to take more than 3,000 USD out of the country, they must present the customs declaration form completed upon entry and the bank receipt proving the purchase of foreign currency within Ethiopia. Regardless of residency status, foreigners are prohibited from carrying more than 200 Ethiopian Birr upon entry and exit. Exchanging currency on the black market is considered a crime in Ethiopia, so all foreign exchange transactions should be carried out through banks and receipts must be kept.
