When is a Residence Permit Required?

Residence Permit Process in Central Iraq

IKB (Erbil/Kurdistan Region) Residence Permit Process.
The residence permit process in the Kurdistan Regional Government (Dohuk, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah) operates differently from central Iraq:
- Applications can only be made to the authorized visa department in Erbil.
- Individual applications are not accepted; applications can only be made through an authorized firm operating in the visa and residence permit field.
- The company submits a commitment letter (sponsorship letter) on behalf of the client; this document states that the person will leave the region within 30 days or will obtain a residence permit, will not travel to other regions of Iraq, and will cover the necessary legal payments.
- If the company does not fulfill the requirements of this commitment, a high administrative fine (the current amount should be confirmed) may be imposed by the Kurdistan Regional Government.
- The permit obtained in this way is only valid within the borders of IKB; passage to central Iraq cannot be made with this permit.
Required Documents for Residence Permit.

- For those employed in companies that work only with government institutions, 3-month, 6-month, or 1-year multiple-entry residence permits can be obtained.
- In subsequent entries, it is sufficient for the sponsor to follow the procedures alone; the person does not need to apply in person again.
- A new blood test is only required if the person stays outside Iraq for more than 3 months.
Penalty for Staying Without a Residence Permit

- Foreigners working without a residence permit (including those working with a tourist visa or entry stamp obtained at the border) are considered illegal; in this case, imprisonment and an administrative fine may be imposed.

Things to Consider When Exiting
Foreigners leaving Iraq may be asked for a "custody document" issued by the company they work for.
