🇬🇧 Guide to Bringing Your Pet to the UK
📌 General Information
If you are planning to travel to the UK with your pet, you must take into account the country’s strict quarantine rules and detailed entry procedures. The UK regulates the entry of pets such as cats and dogs under the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS). Since Türkiye is classified as an “unlisted third country” by the UK, special conditions apply for pet entry. In this category, the cat or dog you plan to bring must be at least 12 weeks old. Failure to comply with these rules may result in your pet being placed in long-term quarantine.
📌 Required Vaccinations and Tests
Rabies vaccination is mandatory for all cats and dogs entering the UK. At least 30 days after the rabies vaccination, a blood sample must be taken from the animal, and a rabies antibody (titration) test must be performed at a laboratory recognized by the UK. There is then a mandatory 90-day waiting period before entering the UK. Entry before this period is not permitted. In addition, for dogs, Echinococcus multilocularis treatment is also required. This treatment must be recorded in the passport by a veterinarian with the date and time stated, and the dog must enter the UK no earlier than 24 hours and no later than 5 days after treatment.
📌 Microchip and Identification
The UK requires all pets to have a microchip. The microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccination, and the microchip number must be recorded in the pet passport. The microchip information must be stated in English in the passport, stamped, and signed by the veterinarian.
📌 Pet Passport and Documentation
Before traveling, you must obtain an internationally valid pet passport. Passports issued after the rabies vaccination are not accepted. You must also obtain a Third Country Official Veterinary Certificate from the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture in your area of residence. This document must be used to enter the UK within 10 days of issuance. Documents must be current, as outdated versions are not accepted. During travel, you must present the pet passport, along with the owner’s passport and flight ticket.
📌 Quarantine Process
All cats and dogs traveling from Türkiye to the UK are subject to quarantine. The quarantine period generally ranges from 4 to 6 months. During this time, you may visit your pet, but you cannot remove it from the quarantine area. Quarantine fees, veterinary check-ups, and additional vaccination costs are charged separately. For short-term travel, it is not recommended to bring your pet due to the lengthy and costly quarantine process.
📌 Transport and Logistics Services
The process for transporting pets should begin at least 8 weeks before travel. Professional pet transport agencies can ensure your pet’s safe journey from the airport to the quarantine facility, handling the necessary bureaucratic procedures on your behalf. Having all documents complete and ensuring vaccinations and treatments are completed on time is crucial to avoid delays or complications.
